SamWelcome back to BBC Learning English where today we are going to look at ‘both’, ‘either’ and ‘neither’.

In all three cases, we are talking about two things.

We use ‘both’ to talk about 2/2 things. So for example, ‘Both tea and coffee contain caffeine.’

Tea contains caffeine, and coffee contains caffeine.

We use ‘neither’ to talk about 0/2 things. So for example, ‘Neither coffee nor tea contain alcohol.’

Coffee doesn't contain alcohol, and tea doesn't contain alcohol.

We use ‘either’ to talk about 1/2 things. So ‘In the morning, I drink either tea or coffee.’

Not both, just one.

Both vs either vs neither All three words are used to talk about two things.这三个词都用来谈论 “两者、两件事情”。

Both means two of two things.限定词 “both” 的意思是 “二者都……”。

Neither means zero of two things. We use 'neither... nor...' to specify what the two things are.限定词 “neither” 的意思是 “二者都不”。搭配 “neither... nor...” 用来具体说明这两者是什么。

Either means one of two things. We use 'either... or...' to specify what the two things are.限定词 “either” 的意思是 “二者中的任意一个”。搭配 “either... or...” 用来具体说明这两者是什么。
